Local results are a different competition from the blue links underneath them, decided by three things, and only one of them is anything like traditional SEO. That is why a business can have a perfectly good website and be invisible in the map.
How do I rank in the Google map pack?
Three factors decide it: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move the searcher, so distance is largely fixed. Relevance is your Business Profile matching what was typed, which is free to fix. Prominence is how well known you are locally, which is the part that takes work and the part everyone skips.
Nearly every "I am not showing up" case is one of the first two, and both are free to check this afternoon. Verified profile, correct primary category, service area set honestly, name matching the one on your signage rather than one stuffed with keywords. That last one gets businesses suspended, and a suspension costs weeks.
- Check the profile is verified and not suspended An unverified or suspended profile cannot rank at all, and the notice is easy to miss if it went to an address nobody reads.
- Fix the primary category first It is the single strongest relevance signal in local. Pick the one your best customers would type, not the broadest one available.
- Make the name the real name "Joe's Plumbing" outranks "Joe's Plumbing Emergency Drain Repair London" for long, because the second is a policy breach waiting to be reported.
- Make the address and phone identical everywhere Directories, your site, your invoices. Not nearly identical. Identical. Inconsistency is the most common quiet cause of a weak profile.
- Then build prominence, and only then Reviews, local citations, and being mentioned by sites in your town. This is the slow part and it is the part competitors have not done either.
- Effort most businesses spend
- Where the result comes from
Illustrative of the pattern rather than a measurement. The gap on the left is the point: the two cheapest fixes carry half the outcome and are the two most often skipped, while the website work most people start with matters least in the map pack specifically.
Growth is a process. Nothing here happens overnight, and anybody promising you overnight results is lying to you.

In order of how often it is the cause: the profile is unverified or suspended, the primary category is wrong, the business name or address does not match what is filed elsewhere, or you are simply further from the searcher than the three businesses being shown. The last one is not a fault.
That final point saves people a lot of money. The map pack shows three results and it shows them relative to where the person is standing. If you are checking from your office, you are seeing the result for your office, not for your customers. Check from the edges of the area you actually serve before concluding anything is broken.
Does a service area business rank differently?
Yes, and it is harder. A business with no public address is tied to the area it declares rather than to a point on the map, so it competes across a wider radius against businesses that have a fixed location inside it. Declaring a service area larger than you can serve makes this worse, not better.
The workable approach is to be honest about the radius and to build real local prominence inside it: reviews that mention the town, mentions from sites based there, and pages on your own site about work actually done in each place. Pages that are the same text with the town swapped are the doorway pattern, and they are recognised.
How much do reviews matter?
They matter for prominence and they matter enormously for whether somebody chooses you once you are shown, which is the part people forget. Ranking third with forty recent reviews beats ranking first with four from two years ago.
What we will not do is write them, buy them, or tie anything to what they say. We will help you ask properly, at the moment the work is finished, in a way that does not breach the platform's policy. Incentivised reviews get profiles suspended, and a suspension is a worse outcome than the slow honest version of this.
How long does local SEO take?
A profile fix can move within days, because it changes relevance and relevance is recalculated quickly. Prominence takes months, because it is built out of other people's behaviour: reviews arriving, sites mentioning you, people searching for you by name.
That split is worth planning around. Do the free relevance work first and see what it moves, because it frequently moves enough that the paid work turns out to be smaller than expected. Then decide.
